THE BEAR - Work in progress

THE BEAR - A foray into sculpture
(Work in progress: April 2022 to June 2022)

What do you think I might be making?
Creating the mainframe. The challenge lay in getting the posture and body proportion as accurate as possible, while fitting it into a product concept in mind.
Decided to take this out of the studio and create from home, as I would be able to work uninterrupted for longer hours. My cat decided to keep me company for this.
The paws were a different challenge. Keeping the clay moist enough to hold its shape for carving, and then finding the right tools and approach for the details; besides trying to maintain acceptable accuracy. Had to redo them a few times!
Finally adding in the eyes and ears, once I was done with the paws. I held off putting them in as I was still working on the size and proportion of the head. Also, if the ears were added too early, I will have to keep it from drying too quickly.

It was quite comical, seeing it with eyes sans ears! Once the ears went in, this guys starts to look rather adorable to me! No wonder some argue that the ears of the bear are it's cutest part. Haha...
Still a little undecided if I should model the head after a Grizzly bear or Brown bear. Decided to try on the look of a Grizzly before I was done for the day. I rather like the look of it before I filled up the face to resemble a Grizzly - shall sit on this for a bit till I get a chance to return to this project!
Managed to complete making this piece to send for bisque firing before travelling out of Singapore for a month.

Made a smaller pot with similar textures out of the remnant clay, as the clay I used is recycled. This will allow me to test some glazes, and see what the final clay colour looks like. This will help me to decide before glazing the actual bear.

(Pardon the hastily taken photos as I had to rush off.)
You may have guessed by now what this might be. :)

It is an essential oil burner. The oils will go into the carved out log, and the tealight would sit in the cavity of the bear. The user has the option of also putting the tealight or small candle in the round wood textured holder. This should catch dripping wax.

Glad to see that the artwork is still in good shape after bisque firing! I celebrate whatever wins there are. Haha...
